As summer arrives we start to spend more and more time outside and in the water. This means there is an increase in the potential for more injuries. Here are some summer safety tips to help you avoid potential accidents.

    1. If you are on the water ALWAYS wear a life jacket. Do not use other flotation devices as a substitute for life jackets; that is just as dangerous. Always wear a certified life jacket.

    2. When playing outside or on the water don't go alone. If you have someone with you  and an accident occurs you will either have someone to help you or someone to go and get or call for help.

    3. Make sure you are properly hydrated. The summer heat can cause dehydration very quickly, especially when on the water or playing sports. Dehydration can cause reduced reaction time and reduced awareness. Having a lot of water around is a great way for you and your family and/or friends to stay hydrated.

    4. Always be prepared for the rays of the summer sun. Making sure you and those around you are wearing the proper sun screen protection. Also, another thing to remember is to reapply the sunscreen if you are going to be outside for long periods of time. This will help avoid sun burns and sun poisoning.

    5. Be aware of your home and your property. Kids playing outside in your yard, your driveway, and even the sidewalk in front of your property lines of your house can increase the potential for accidents. Also, if you have equipment in your yard for children to play on like a swing set, trampoline, pool, bikes and scooters, make sure there is always an adult around and the kids are playing safely.
